Hand Moulding Kit Instructions

Please read the instruction booklet carefully before use.

Note: This is not a toy. Keep away from children.

  1. Preparing to Start

    1. The moulding process takes around 30 minutes.
    2. Set up a clean and stable work area.
    3. Practice the pose you want to cast.
  2. Making the Mould

    1. Pour 2 litres (2 qt. / 3.7 oz) of 25°C (77°F) water into the moulding bucket.
    2. Optional: Lightly coat hands with baby oil or petroleum jelly for easier release.
    3. Empty alginate powder into water. You have ~2–2.5 minutes to mix and coat your hands before it sets.
    4. Stir for about 90 seconds using a large spoon or hand mixer.
    5. Coat hands in mixture—take no more than 20 seconds.
    6. Insert hands into bucket in desired pose. Avoid contact with sides/bottom.
    7. Wait 3–10 minutes until the mixture sets (rubber-like texture).
    8. Remove hands carefully, one at a time.
    9. Clean the mould with fresh water, drain thoroughly.
    10. Proceed immediately or refrigerate for up to 24 hours with lid on.
  3. Making the Cast

    1. Set aside 1 tbsp of casting powder for touch-ups.
    2. Wear protective gloves and a face mask.
    3. Pour 0.6 litres of 25°C (77°F) water into a mixing bowl.
    4. Empty the casting powder into the bowl. You have approx. 10–12 minutes before it sets.
    5. Let it absorb water for 30 seconds.
    6. Mix with a gloved hand until it resembles paint. Do not exceed 2 minutes.
    7. Tip the mould at a 45° angle. Pour in a quarter of the mix while rotating to fill gaps.
    8. Repeat until mould cavity is full.
    9. Gently tap/shake the bucket to remove air bubbles as it sets.
    10. Dispose of leftover mixture in the bin. Do not pour down the drain.
    11. Let the cast harden for 2–4 hours.
  4. Removing the Cast

    1. Turn the bucket upside down and press/pull sides to break suction.
    2. Carefully peel off the alginate mould from the cast.
    3. Use the sculpting tool to clean fine details and remove leftover alginate.
    4. Patch air bubble voids with the reserved casting mix. Dry for 1 hour.
    5. Rinse the cast with cool, clean water and let it cure.
  5. Finishing Touches

    1. Cure the cast in a ventilated space for 7 days, until fully dry and no longer cool to touch.
    2. Optional: Sand the cast to remove imperfections.
    3. Blow away dust and debris—ready for painting.
    4. After painting, allow an additional 5 days of drying time.
